You will probably know I am a massive book worm and I love all things to do with reading and encouraging Reading for Pleasure! When I was on my first placement for my PGCE, in Year 1, one of our tasks was to create a Reading for Pleasure display. I loved this! I did it with my placement partner and together we decided we wanted to create a tree in our Year 1 classroom! The topic we were currently doing was to do with woodland animals, so we wanted to include animals in the display to link with this.
We found a big cardboard cylinder which we dabbed with sponges to create a bark effect. We also used some green material which we wrapped around the trunk to create vines and to make it a bit more 3D. Across the ceiling we used grey and brown papers which we twisted and tied with string to the ceiling! We attached the leaves to string and hung them from the ceiling too.

Our mentor had some little ladybirds and bees which we loved, so added them to the hangin leaves too! We then dotted animals around the tree, some hanging, some on the tree trunk and some on the grass next to the tree.
To encourage reading for pleasure, the idea was for the animals to have speech bubbles with pictures of the books they recommend to the children! The animals then said what the title of the book was too, therefore having a visual aid for those able to read and for those who would need a picture.
We were overwhelmed by the response we had from the children once we had finished the display. One child said, "I don't like the new reading area.. I LOVE it!" It was so cute because usually he was a reluctant reader, so this was amazing. We loved seeing the children find the books their favourite animals had recommended to them! It was so lovely to see our hard work had paid off and we had inspired the children to have a love for reading. It created a real buzz around reading which was incredible!
