As a Geography lover and graduate, when I was asked to run a club when I was a TA, I was desperate to relate it to my love for Geography and travelling! So along came the idea of 'Travel Club'.
The children arrived at Travel Club each week ecstatic to find out what country we would be travelling to! They would ask me whenever they saw me around school if I'd booked the flights yet or if they could have a clue as to where we were going!? But I kept it all a surprise for when they arrived! On the board I would have the flag of the country to allow them to guess where our destination would be. Some were in fact very good with their flags!
We would then all board the plane (sat in pairs in rows on the carpet), click our sealt belts in and fly around the World! I would play an aeroplane clip at this point and the children would put their arms out to help the plane fly! (Yes I did occassionally act as an airhostess telling them where the exits were but they unfortunately didn't get it and see the funny side..)
Once we had arrived in the country, I would teach them all about it by showing them videos, pictures and my own photos if I had been there myself! We sometimes tried food from the country to have a taste experience of being in the country!
The children would then add to their 'passports' by firstly colouring in a flag of the country. I would then give them a range of pictures to colour in of the main monuments and tourist attractions from that country that we had learned about! I gave them the option to also write a postcard if they wanted to, to someone to say what they had been up to on their trip. Whilst the children completed their activities, I would play music from that country in the background. Sometimes we would all dance along to it too! Here are a few examples of the children's colouring.
At the end of the year, the children were asked what their favourite
thing was that they'd done that year, and so many of them said Travel
Club - so cute! Travel Club was honestly my highlight of the week, so I can't wait to be able to do it again one day!
